이 장문을 독해하기 위해서는 that을 관계대명사와 단순대명사의 구분, 병령구조, 비교급해석 순서를 알아야만 한다. 

1번의 that은 관계대명사로 '1that prevailed in psychology '구문이 앞의 명사구'The view of humanity'을 꾸며준다.

 'The view of humanity'이 메인 주어가 되며 문장의 was가 메인 동사가 된다. 

2번의 that은 앞에 나온 view라는 단어의 대명사이고,

3번의 and는 병렬구조를 만드는 접속사로서 managing이라는 단어가 앞에 있는 keeping과 같은 형태를 알 수 있다. 결국 managing 앞에는 that of a species가 똑같이 지니고 있다고 생각하면 된다.(이것을 병렬이라고 한다.)

비교급 more와 than이 나오는데, 비교급은 뒤에서부터 앞으로 해석하면 된다.
